Pre-Marital Counseling

The benefits of pre-marital counseling are many.  As a couple, you spend a great deal of time planning for the wedding day; shouldn’t you spend as much, if not more time on what happens after the wedding day?  This program called Prepare/Enrich can do just that.  We will go over topics such as finances, conflict resolution, communication, parenting, strength and growth areas of the relationship, as well as lots of discussion on how your families of origin have worked with these issues in the past, and what you would like to be the same or different in the family you are about to create.

Our 50-55 minute sessions will allow you both to explore the issues through a well-designed program with your best interests in mind.  We will first meet to discuss how the program works and planning for future sessions.  I will then set you up to take an online assessment individually in the privacy of your own home. When the assessments are complete, I will compile the results and put them together in a folder for you along with a workbook to use throughout the remaining sessions.  We will then reconvene to discuss the results and set our plan for the rest of the sessions.

To complete the program and be awarded a certificate that allows you a discount on your state marriage license, you will need to complete at least 8 sessions and cover all the material in the workbook.  Many couples will do a few additional sessions throughout the program to be sure they have covered all the topics they feel are important.  I am not strict in sticking to “just” the workbook, as other issues will arise during the period of planning a wedding and a life together.  I am open to working with you regarding any issues that come up but we do need to finish the workbook in order for you to be given the certificate.

My goal for you is to be prepared for a life of dedication to each other and a successful and long marriage that is pleasing to both of you.

I may do an individual session with each partner as needed throughout the process.  I do not keep secrets when I am working with a couple or family.  Any information derived during the individual sessions is also open for discussion during the couple’s sessions.  If a secret does come out that the partner is unaware of, I will stop counseling and work with the individual with the secret to be able to tell his/her partner what is happening.

I ask my clients to only keep their cell phones on during session if they have children home alone. You are worth the effort to take some time out of your day to devote to YOU as a couple without distractions.

As you open up and become more familiar with some issues in the relationship,  you may feel as if you are periodically moving backward instead of forward.  This is simply because we are discussing topics that you were not comfortable in verbalizing in the past.  This is normal.  Have faith in yourself and this process and you can get through those apparent moments of frustration.

There is no right or wrong answer in our sessions.  I want you to feel comfortable in saying what is on your mind and to feel confident in disagreeing with me at any time.  We do need to be respectful when someone else is speaking, though and allow them your full attention, as you would expect when you are speaking. You both know yourself better than anyone else and in order for me to get to know you; I need you both to be honest with what is working and what is not.

The initial program fee (which does not include the session fee) is $140, (payable by end of 2nd session) which includes the online assessment, scoring of the assessment and 30 minutes time for me to review the results and put your workbook/folder together.

Each 50-55 minute session has a fee of $150. See my Services & Rates page for discounted package offers.
